It was way back in 1949 that a young and dashing Dev Anand decided to launch his own production house so that he could make good, entertaining movies. Anand's dream bore fruit with Navketan Films. Beginning with its first release, 'Baazi' in 1951, the production house has today completed 60 years of existence, just a couple of years younger than the Indian Republic. Anand's dreams and Navketan's fortunes continued to soar as the actor's brothers, the talented Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand joined him. Some of the most enduring Hindi classics have rolled out from the Navketan banner, films like 'Hum Dono', 'Guide', 'Kala Paani', 'Jewel Thief', 'Tere Ghar ke Samne', 'Prem Pujari', 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', 'Des Pardes' , 'Swami Dada', 'Love At Times Square' etc. Time does not seem to age him and the man just refuses to fade away. Every year, no matter that he is in his Eighties, Dev saab continues to roll out one movie after another with equal passion and fervor. The banner .has given a fresh lease to the careers of some like Nanda, and launched many new faces like Zaheeda, Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim, Jackie Shroff, Natasha Sinha and the late Richa Sharma. But what many don't know is that the late Guru Dutt directed his first movie, 'Baazi', for Navketan and so did Vijay Anand. The likes of music composer Jaidev, director Raj Khosla, actor Johnny Walker, singer Kishore Kumar, lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi and Neeraj, are among the many who began their careers with Navketan before going on to become legends of Hindi cinema. Rightly so, the Government of India decided to honor the veteran actor director producer by organizing a three day film festival in New Delhi last week. The I&B Ministry showcased Dev Anand's great films like 'Guide', 'Jewel Thief' and 'Taxi Driver' and a colored version of 'Hum Dono'. According to sources, the Siri Fort auditorium, where the festival was held, was jammed with fans of Dev saab, who thronged the venue for a glimpse of him. The evergreen Dev saab would definitely have been touched by this display of love by the audience. Incidentally, he is working on his latest film, 'Chargesheet'. Forever busy, forever involved in the process of filmmaking, that is Dev Anand and the Navketan banner for you.
