MUMBAI (Reuters) - A star-struck policeman has been suspended for behaving inappropriately after he hugged a top Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt who was released from jail on bail, an official said on Monday.
Eight other constables who shook hands with Dutt when he emerged from a jail in Pune last week have also been asked to explain why they should not be punished.
Dutt, 48, has been jailed for six years for obtaining illegal weapons from gangsters linked to India's worst bomb attacks in 1993 in which 257 people were killed.
He has appealed the sentence and the Supreme Court has granted him bail citing a technicality.
The suspended policeman was caught by television cameras as he rushed towards the actor and embraced him. Other jail constables stood in line and saw Dutt off with a handshake.
"This action amounts to violation of prison rules and decorum as they were seen being friendly with a convicted criminal," Rajendra Dhamne, the chief of the prison in Pune, said.
