January 16, 1991 was marked as a red letter day. It was the day for Dilip Kumar; the greatest legends among actors in Indian Cinema take one big step. It was the day then he was to launch a new dream, a new ambition. A dream and an ambition millions of his admirers were waiting for it was the day when Dilip Kumar, the actor among actors was to take off as a director. The director in him was always living within him, was a part of him It was that invisible director who led him to bring out of all the talent he had in him and give it to a film he was to direct. It was that invisible director who was the guiding force behind the film with his name as the director. Now that invisible director has decided to be visible and had taken a decision to direct his first film come what may, It was not an easy decision to take for a man who had made himself a legend during his life time. He was a perfectionist and he wanted all things perfect before he started his career as a director. He worked and re-worked on the script with a team of writers whose talent he had put on trial. It was only when the director in him was ready to take on the challenge that he decided that it was time to ahead and do it. He got his old friends, Kalyanji and Anandji to work on the music. He was the central character, Justice Kalinga in the film called "Kalinga" He got together a team of artistes to work with him, it was their privilege. January 16, 1991, that night at the Centaur Hotel in Juhu was not just another night. It was the night the Shahenshah-E-Alam of acting was to officially direct the first shot of his first film. The entire industry was their at night when the lights were brighter when the night look glorious, when the stars in the sky shone themselves, every star was out to celebrate. The Shahenshah himself face the camera for the first shot after the formalities were performed by three of the leading director of the industry who were all his fans
Justice Kalinga, Dilip Kumar, delivered a sermon like only he could. The first shot had to be okayed, how could it not, it was the Shahenshah in action after all. Both the earth and the sky and all the other worlds above were in a mood to celebrate. It was a glorious night, a glamorous night, a night never to be forgotten. The film started, the Shahenshah work according to his own shahi ways And soon there was trouble, the producer was too small to understand the greatest minds in cinema of this century. There were constant clashes, the producer created problems and put the Shahenshah under pressure. Work continued but it was not the way the Shahenshah wanted. The producer found all kinds of reasons to bring obstacles in the progress of the film till the Shahenshah threw up his hands in anger and disbursed, he had lost interest. There were efforts made to bring about and understanding but every time they failed it is sixteen years now and "Kalinga" is in no mans land. It is difficult to say if the film will ever see the light of day now, especially with age and failing heath telling on the Shahenshah and the producer lying in some limbo, a place called no were. It is undoubtedly, one of the greatest accidents in the history of Indian Cinema, an accident which should have been avoided in the interest of something the history of cinema in India could boast about whatever the consequences because a Shahenshah directs a film just once in several centuries.
