Washington, Sep 15 (ANI): After giving Tom Cruise a tough time over the past few months by limiting 'Valkyrie' shoot locations, Germany has taken a classic turnaround by allowing the film to shoot at the original site, where the officers behind the conspiracy were executed.
Thorsten Albig, a spokesman for the German finance ministry, has announced that Germany will open the doors to Bendlerblock, the location where plot leader Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg and several of his co-conspirators were killed shortly after the bomb they planted failed to kill Nazi leader Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944.
"There was a change of sentiment at the ministry of defence," Variety quoted Albig, as saying. "The latest request by the film team was given a positive answer. There was a different feeling about the project. We will take a closer look with director Bryan Singer at the location and, while ensuring that the dignity of the shrine is protected, see what's possible and what's not," he added.
The German government had claimed that they had objections about the shoot due to bad past experiences with other film crews desecrating historical locations such as the Bendlerblock.
The government's initial refusal to allow filming at the key location led to speculation over whether Cruise's religious beliefs had triggered the decision. The rejection also sparked a wave of support for the film from leading German newspaper columnists and filmmakers, including Wolfgang Petersen.
The movie, directed by Bryan Singer and scheduled for release next year, stars Cruise as Col. Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg, the aristocratic army officer who was executed after a failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944. (ANI)
