The film is set in a North African village, where the local women who go on 'love strike' against their husbands. Set in a poverty stricken village which has no source of drinking water. Instead, the villagers have to rely on a water source atop a steep hill, the fetching of which is seen solely as women’s work. Many of them have injured themselves and suffered miscarriages due to having to carry heavy burdens but the men are not bothered. After yet another women miscarries, Leila, the newly married and most literate of the lot suggests that they take steps to make the men fetch the water. They go on a ‘love strike’ and withhold sexual relations until the men agree to fetch the water, or better still, persuade the government to connect the village.
