In an industry where marriages soon lose their charm and struggle immensely to survive, the magical love story of Shahrukh Khan and Gauri is definitely worth telling. Their marriage has survived many tests of time, making them one of the most inspiring and stable couples of Bollywood.
As Shahrukh Khan gets ready to celebrate his birthday on November 2nd, read on to know his journey of love and marriage. The romance of this Bollywood superstar, who is known to be ultimate on-screem romantic is nothing less than a 'filmy' story in itself.
The meet cue
In 1984, Shahrukh for the first time laid eyes on Gauri Chibber when he was only 18 years old at a common friend’s party. He saw her dancing with another boy and due to his shy temperament he could not ask her for a dance. When he finally gathered the strength to ask her for a dance, Gauri who herself was not interested, turned him down by saying that she was waiting for her boyfriend. Shahrukh’s dreams of love shattered at that very moment.
Actually there was no ‘boyfriend’; it was her brother she was there with. Shahrukh, in an interview recalls, that later when he came to know about this, he called her and said, “mujhe bhi apna bhai samjho.” (Consider me your brother too!). This is how their beautiful relationship began.
SRK becomes a possessive boyfriend
Gauri fell for Shahrukh's wit, confidence and style, and the two started going out. But things were not as hunky-dory for these two young love birds. Shahrukh, by nature was very possessive about Gauri. He did not like her to keep her hair open, let alone talking to other boys. It was then that Gauri realised that she needed a break from this relationship. A day after she celebrated her birthday at Shahrukh’s place (complete with flowers, gifts and cake), she left for Mumbai with her friends without telling him.
Realisation of love
It was at this moment Shahrukh realised his love for Gauri. Shahrukh who was very close to his mother, told her what had happened. She not only told him to go after his love, but also gave him 10,000 rupees to help him out.
Shahrukh recalls that he and his friends searched the entire city, but had no luck in finding Gauri. It was only after a very frantic search he found her at a beach. They both laid eyes on each other and broke down crying while in each other’s arms. That moment they realised that both could not live without each other and decided to get married. This is when the real drama began.
Family drama begins
So far, as lovers were making pace with each other’s love and different temperaments, little did they show concern for the biggest factor of their relationship- their different religious backgrounds.
Gauri belonged to a family of Hindu Brahmins. Her father was a pure vegetarian and even had a temple within the house. And, Shahrukh was a Muslim. It was obvious that her parents did not approve of their relationship. After all, religion does play an important role in love and marriages in the country. Leave aside the religion, they also considered Shahrukh unsettled and their own daughter, young and immature to take such a big decision.
To be together, Forever
In an interview, years later, this is what Gauri said about her parents' reaction, “Yes, my parents were obviously not for it because we were so young and then to take a decision to get married to a person who was going to join films and also from a different religion.”
The couple went through a lot of struggle to be together, from keeping their relationship a secret for five years to even changing his name to impose as a Hindu boy to impress Gauri’s parents. They did all they could to convince her parents about their love and its seriousness. Shahrukh was finally able to get Gauri's hand and her parent's blessings. And, the couple finally got married on October 25, 1991. It was a Hindu marriage ceremony.
In an interview, King Khan said, "I don't know whether I am a nut but I am very intense about my love for Gauri. She's a part of me." While Gauri says, "He was the first person I met and went out with. And he has been the only man." Don't Miss: 8 Indian Celebs who Found Love Overseas
Today, even after 22 years of marriage, the couple still seems deeply in love. They are the proud parents of three lovely children– Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. Both Shahrukh and Gauri respect each other’s religion and follow both at home. Their love, commitment, trust, fidelity and belief in one another, is an example to all couples within the industry and outside.
Shahrukh believes that for him, there is only one girl and that is Gauri. Shahrukh always stays amazed by the way she handles their family, his production house and her work as an interior designer. He believes that she is a complete woman in every way!
Here’s wishing the happy couple many more years of togetherness and love!
