Baby’s cure raises hope for HIV

In a medical breakthrough that offers hope for millions infected with HIV/AIDS, a baby born HIV positive in Mississippi has been cured with a course of antiretroviral drugs. The baby who was administered a strong and swift dose of a three-drug infusion within 30 hours of delivery, has been off medication for over a year now, and is believed to no longer be infectious.  The success of the treatment has largely been attributed to the swiftness and high dosage of the drug. “This could have a profound effect on how we approach babies born to HIV-infected moms," said Dr.  Steven Deeks, an HIV/AIDS researcher at the University of California at the news conference at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta on Sunday.
