Actors from superhero movies did surprisingly well at the Golden Globes

The 70th Golden Globes were a good night for superheroes, supervillains, morally ambiguous figures who walk both sides of the superhero/supervillain fence, and even a real-life superhero. This year's acting awards run the entire gamut.

Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) was perhaps the biggest winner, taking home the award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his magnificent foray into the musical form as “Les Miserables” protagonist Jean Valjean. From the same film, Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) similarly stretched as the doomed Fantine, picking up Best Supporting Actress. “X-Men: First Class”' Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), also known for her work as “The Hunger Games”' Katniss Everdeen, won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for “Silver Linings Playbook,” for her role as a young widow, which she was compelled to inhabit using only acting ability, not her customary shape-shifting mutation. Lesser known supervillain Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz) from “The Green Hornet” won Best Supporting Actor for “Django Unchained.”

Best Actor and Actress in a Drama went to two actors who, in roles outside the confining boundaries of superhero fare, portrayed real-life doers of very large deeds. As the lead in “Lincoln,” Daniel Day-Lewis cemented the abolition of slavery in American law, and as protagonist Maya in “Zero Dark Thirty,” Jessica Chastain spearheaded the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, both without even putting on a cape.
