Katharine McPhee’s plunging black dress is a smash on the Golden Globes red carpet

Sunday's Golden Globe Awards red carpet featured a bevy of black and white, but one little black dress stood out in a major way. Actress Katharine McPhee dazzled in a plunging V-neck gown with a thigh-high slit by Olivier Theyskens for Theory. And when we say plunging…

The “Smash” star dominated the Sexiest Dress category (if there was one), leaving E! host Ryan Seacrest nearly speechless (and he's seen it all!).

McPhee told Seacrest that black and white will be big for spring (she researched it!), so she got a jump start and went for it with the daring black stunner, despite the unseasonably chilly California weather. She accessorized with a high updo and swinging earrings, but left the necklace to the imagination.

While several other Hollywood stars were shivering, the actress said she was too excited to be cold.

"I'm not feeling anything," she said. "I'm just excited to be here."

Seacrest told her she "definitely accomplished sexy" with the ultra-exposed, plunging neckline.

While this dress was truly McPhee's red carpet moment, its designer, Olivier Theyskens, had his own breakout moment in 1998 when Madonna donned one of his dresses to the Academy Awards. The Belgian designer debuted his first Theory collection in the fall of 2011.

At the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards, "Smash" is nominated in the Best Series, Musical or Comedy category against "Big Bang Theory," "Modern Family," "Episodes," and "Girls." But clearly its star's dress is already the big winner of the night.

The second season of the musical drama is scheduled to start with a two-hour season premiere on Feb. 5.
