This year's Oscar nominations saw particularly good news for the James Bond franchise, which celebrated its 50th year in 2012. The hugely successful “Skyfall” scored five nominations, which almost single-handedly equaled the seven nominations received by the first 22 films in the series combined.  It's the first time a Bond film has received an Academy Award nomination in over 30 years, but it was still shut out of the top categories including Best Picture.

Of those seven previous nominations, only “Goldfinger” (Best Sound Effects) and “Thunderball” (Special Visual Effects) won; the latter win coming some 47 years ago. The last Bond movie to score a nomination was “For Your Eyes Only,” which got the nod for the theme song performed by Sheena Easton in 1982.

“Skyfall” being nominated for Best Score, Original Song, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Cinematography gives the latest 007 flick an excellent chance to take home an award, with Original Song and Cinematography its strongest bets (although cinematographer Roger Deakins has been nominated nine previous times without a win). The film did miss out on the big categories, even though it received a Producers Guild nomination for Best Picture, and Javier Bardem is a Golden Globe nominee for Best Supporting Actor.

Even if "Skyfall" walks away empty-handed, it still holds the distinction of being the most successful Bond film at the box office, having grossed over a billion dollars worldwide.

The 85th Academy Awards will be broadcast on February 24th, at which time we will see if James Bond finally becomes the man with the golden statue again.
