    ‘The Artist’ may have clocked in $12 million at the French box office, bagged 5 Oscars and even won the best actor award at Cannes (Jean Dujardin) but what is more laudable is the fact that it is the first silent movie to be nominated and to win at the Academy Awards since ‘Wings’ in 1927.

    Being a silent film, actress Berenice Bejo had to work without dialogues for the first time but what she found exciting and challenging was trying to imitate an American actress who was very unlike her. She says, “The challenge was to try and focus on the body language, but the rest of it was finding a way of being an American actress. I think of American actors -- they take up a lot of space, they talk really loud, they talk with their hands. So I had to find that, since being a French actor, everything is more petite.”

    The Academy has always rigidly awarded a certain type. A type that confirms to the jury’s checklist. Moving-tick, social message-tick, racially democratic-tick etc. But every year (including this one), there are some cinematic gems that offer something more and beyond, even if it doesn’t score with the ticks. So, here we attempt to draw up a list of such films that deserve a mention, regardless of whom the Academy decides to crown.

  • Ashley Judd’s TV show premieres in India

    It’s a big deal since her fans will get to see the TV show ‘Missing’ before the rest of the world

    For the first time in the history of Indian television an international show will premiere in India four days prior to its launch in the US. MISSING, an internationally acclaimed series is an espionage drama. The show boasts of a huge cast starring Hollywood actor and humanitarian Ashley Judd, England’s most versatile actor Sean Bean and Cliff Curtis the actor from Oscar nominated film ‘The Piano’ in the lead.

  • Vidya’s next: A comic thriller

    Vidya and Emraan have been cast in UTV’s comic-thriller ‘Ghanchakkar’ to be directed by Rajkumar Gupta

    UTV Motion Pictures has signed Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan for the mad, quirky comic thriller titled ‘Ghanchakkar’. The film will be directed by Rajkumar Gupta of ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and ‘Aamir’ fame. The film is expected to go on the floors in August this year.

    Announcing the movie and the pairing, Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, says, “It is a pleasure to announce ‘Ghanchakkar’, our third film in a row with Rajkumar Gupta, one of the most talented writer-directors in the industry today.
