Hollywood and the ‘Seven Year Itch’

Hollywood and Seven Year ItchHollywood and Seven Year Itch

The term 'Seven Year Itch' can be traced back to the 1955 Hollywood flick starring Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell (remember her famous wind blown halter dress?) . The movie mentions a book that says many men have extra-marital affairs after seven years of marriage — terming it the"7-Year Itch". Ever since then, with her halter gown, the term too became a rage and is disturbingly seen in most marriages .

Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes were the latest to fall under the spell of the so-called '7-year-itch' when they filed for divorce last year.

What is behind this inexplicable phenomenon? Is it astrology, numerology or even psychology? Why do couples decide to go their separate ways after seven long years of being together? Is it something that occurs to them all of a sudden or is it the culmination or an eventual surge of all those pent-up emotions that have been lying dormant like a volcano for years? If the latter sounds more plausible, then it's more likely to be a woman's initiative. Generally if a man can't stand a relationship, he is less likely to drag it for a long time before terminating it unless there is a sudden entry of the 'other woman' into his life.

Men are known to be fickle. They love to explore variety, but once they settle in, they are less likely (read too lazy) to opt for something different. But they're known to be hugely unpredictable when it comes to extra-marital affairs. Like James Bond, whose passions are his Aston Martin and vodka martinis. Still when it comes to women, even Mr. Bond is unpredictable!

Remember Madonna and Guy Ritchie - another made-for-each-other duo who became a victim of the seven-year-itch! All through their marriage, Guy had never blamed Madge for her on-stage and offstage antics. But then all of a sudden, he criticised her provocative image in public.

The glitz and glamour world of Hollywood may be different from the real world, but it's a highlighted minority where the changing norms of society get reflected. The repercussions of what's going on there can be found anywhere else in the world. It can be something that's happening with your neighbor, or even within your own family. It makes you think that may be that itch is not something that appeared out of nowhere; may be it has been there all the time which has been ignored for many any number of reasons.

In short, this '7-year-itch' indeed seems to be a reality, if the recent spate of Hollywood breakups is anything to go by. This numeric curse has claimed many victims - Madonna and Guy Ritchie, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe, Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes, and if rumours are to be believed, even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (just one more year to go). Beware!
