This Friday's big release, Sajid Khan's Ajay Devgn starrer, HIMMATWALA, was expected to embark on a good, if not great start with the Good Friday (national holiday) helping it's cause further. The film did open to a good response but mainly at the single screen cinemas of the Hindi belt with the collections in the range of 55-75 percent. The multiplexes though were not as enthusiastic, especially in the metros with occupancies in the range of 20-30 percent. The latter shows did show some improvement.
However given the widest release ever for an Ajay Devgn solo starrer, and also taking into account the star's recent big box-office successes (especially in Rohit Shetty films ) and also Sajid Khan's enviable track record of 100 percent success, HIMMATWALA can still hope for a first day in the range of 11-12 crore and a good weekend.
Meanwhile Last Friday's two releases, Priyadarshan's RANGREZZ and Suparn Verma's AATMA did benefit somewhat from the Holi holidays. While RANGREZZ netted around 6.5 crore, (to be validated) AATMA managed nearly 8.75 crore (to be validated), inclusive of paid previews for both the films.
With the modest budget of AATMA (8 crore) being the silver lining (if one may say so!), the Bipasha-Nawazuddin starrer, is a safe bet for the makers who are also the major distributors and hold most of the non-theatrical rights. Alas the same cannot be said about the much more expensive Vashu Bhagnani venture, RANGREZZ, which additionally has much lower collections as opposed to AATMA.
