It was in the year 1959 when film maker Sashadhar Mukherjee better recognized as S. Mukherjee after the success of DIL DEKE DEKHO was planning his next movie LOVE IN SIMLA. Mukherjee along with his director R.K. Nayar were planning a love story with new comers instead of big stars. While actress Sadhana was finalized as the heroine, the duo was hunting for a hero. After rejecting innumerable actors they eventually decided to cast Shammi Kapoor but to their dismay Shammi Kapoor got busy in other movies thanks to the success of DIL DEKE DEKHO.
Hence dejected the two were once sitting in S. Mukherjee's house sipping coffee in the morning when a tall, handsome and charming young man with badminton in his hand entered the house. Seeing him R.K.Nayar jumped with joy and exclaimed, "Mukherjee we have got our hero!" A bewildered Mukherjee asked, "Who?" Nayar replied, "We had hero in our house and we were searching around. Arre, your son Joy is the ideal hero for our movie."
Initially S. Mukherjee had reservations. He felt Joy Mukherjee will not be able to play the role but Nayar assured Mukherjee and took Joy under his supervision. He gave him three months rigorous training and prepared him to face the camera. Rest as they say is history.
After the success of LOVE IN SIMLA, Joy Mukherjee became a star and gave many hits like LOVE IN TOKYO, EK MUSAFIR EK HASEENA, ZIDDI, SHAGIRD, PHIR WOHI DIL LAYA HOON etc. In fact he was called poor film maker's Shammi Kapoor!
