BMW Considering All-Wheel Drive in All Future M Cars

If you consider yourself a BMW enthusiast, M enthusiast, rear-wheel-drive enthusiast, or all of the above, this might be hard news to swallow. Following in the footsteps of AMG and Audi’s RS line, BMW M engineers are considering the switch from rear-wheel to all-wheel-drive with its next generation of sportscars.

Talking to Australia’s Motoring.com.au, M president Friedrich Nitschke said that AWD is likely in the cards, although, it probably won’t come for some time. “On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel-drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6,” stated Nitschke.

This news, Nitschke admits, follows in Audi’s footsteps, but is more specifically targeted at the new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, explaining that, “70 to 80 percent of E63 AMGs are all-wheel drive in the U.S. now.” An impressive number where BMW may be falling behind.

Neither BMW nor M execs have made a final decision, but, considering the success of Audi and AMG, the idea will receive serious consideration.
