Bollywood box-office report of the week

By Abid, Glamsham Editorial

This week's new releases are Vishesh Films' Randeep, Aditi and Sarah starrer MURDER 3 and Kumar S Taurani's Vivek Oberoi and Neha Sharma starrer, JAYANTABHAI KI LOVE STORY. Given that both the films have reasonably popular music (MURDER 3 a wee bit ahead) and known names and big banners associated with them, it will be an interesting battle at the ticket window.

Though initially it appeared that Neeraj Pandey's Akshay Kumar starrer, SPECIAL 26, would lose out to Remo D'Souza's 3D dance extravaganza (featuring Prabhudheva), ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE, but in the end count that did not quite happen. While SPECIAL 26 picked up appreciably during the latter half of the first day itself, and saw a good growth on Saturday and Sunday netting around 25 crore during the opening weekend. On the other hand ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE, which had embarked on a good to superb start saw a noticeable fall as the day progressed. But the film showed a turnaround on the next two days, thus netting a creditable 17 crore during the weekend. As things stand, both SPECIAL 26 (Selling cost 34-35 crore) and ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE (Selling cost 25-26 crore) are set to succeed, given the fact that the two films have quite reasonable associated costs. The rather unusual Akshay, Paresh, Manoj and Kajal starrer has not fared well in the overseas (much better in US) grossing and#163;107,500 from UK and $ 462,300 from the US during the opening weekend (8-10 February).

Checking out Kamal Haasan's VISHWAROOP the film saw decent number as it collected 2 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 50.15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 23 lakhs from Surat, 16.20 lakhs from Baroda, 11.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 75 lakhs from Pune, 9.65 lakhs from Nasik, 10.25 lakhs from Goa, 80 lakhs from Delhi city (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 15.65 lakhs from Noida, 9.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 10.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 16.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.50 lakhs from Agra, 4.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 16 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.50 lakhs from Panipat, 3.50 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 20 lakhs from Calcutta, 2.50 lakhs from Siliguri, 14.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 10.50 lakhs from Raipur, 20 lakhs from Indore, 2.15 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 6.50 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 16 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 2.20 lakhs from Ajmer, 1.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 5.50 lakhs from Kota, 3.50 lakhs from Udaipur, 4.25 lakhs from Hyderabad, 8.50 lakhs from Aurangabad, 2.75 lakhs from Bangalore, 2 lakhs from Vijayawada, 2.65 lakhs from Vishkhapatnam and 4.55 lakhs from Coimbatore. Netting close to 12 crore during the opening week, VISHWAROOP has managed a decent show.

Meanwhile Bejoy Nambiar's DAVID could not capitalize on the pre-release hype and collected 80 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.55 lakhs from Surat, 4 lakhs from Baroda, 2 lakhs from Rajkot, 20 lakhs from Pune, 2 lakhs from Nasik, 2.15 lakhs from Goa, 30 lakhs from Delhi city, 5 lakhs from Noida, 2.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.75 lakhs from Kanpur, 3 lakhs from Lucknow, 7 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.25 lakhs from Chandigarh, 12 lakhs from Calcutta, 1 lakh from Siliguri, 3.65 lakhs from Nagpur, 3 lakhs from Raipur, 4 lakhs from Indore, 1.50 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 5 lakhs from Jaipur, 2 lakhs from Kota, 1.50 lakhs from Udaipur, 9 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2 lakhs from Aurangabad and 20.50 lakhs from Bangalore. Netting a very ordinary 3.50 crore during the opening week DAVID has failed at the ticket-window.

The other releases of the same week, MAI, LISTEN...AMAYA , DEEWANA MAIN DEEWANA, have all been totally rejected at the ticket window.

Concluding with Abbas-Mustan's RACE 2, after a great opening week, the film fell heavily in the second but held well at good cinemas as it collected 2 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 80 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 20 lakhs from Surat, 25 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 17.55 lakhs from Rajkot, 10.50 lakhs from Nasik, 40 lakhs from Pune, 2.65 lakhs from Goa, 2.50 crore from Delhi city (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 25 lakhs from Noida, 22.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 20 lakhs from Kanpur, 32.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 10 lakhs from Agra, 8.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 1.50 lakhs from Aligarh, 35 lakhs from Gurgaon, 5.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.50 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 5 lakhs from Panipat, 8.75 lakhs from Chandigarh, 11.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 4 lakhs from Amritsar, 3 lakhs from Ludhiana, 4.55 lakhs from Bhatinda, 3 lakhs from Ambala, 2 lakhs from Jammu, 40 lakhs from Calcutta, 4.65 lakhs from Siliguri, 20 lakhs from Nagpur, 15 lakhs from Raipur, 25 lakhs from Indore, 6.50 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 20 lakhs from Bhopal, 50 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 6 cinemas unreceived), 6 lakhs from Ajmer, 4 lakhs from Bikaner, 9 lakhs from Kota, 7.65 lakhs from Udaipur, 25 lakhs from Hyderabad, 50 lakhs from Bangalore, 2.65 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 1.50 lakhs from Kochi. Adding another 22 crore, RACE 2 has netted a great 90 crore in two weeks from India. The Anil, Saif, John, Deepika and Jacqueline starrer, RACE 2, is a clean hit. RACE 2 has done very well in the overseas ($6m plus) grossing and#163;823,700 from UK and $1,525,000 from the US till the third weekend (8-10 February).
