Charles Dickens' statue to be erected against dying wishes

1 January 2013

London, Jan. 1 (ANI): Charles Dickens' first statue is set to be unveiled in the city of his birthplace in June - defying his wishes in his will for one not to be created.

The 118,000-pound statue has been commissioned by the Dickens Fellowship and will be erected in Portsmouth, thanks to an anonymous sponsor, who donated the last 25,000 pounds needed.

When commissioned, it was thought to be the only monument in existence until now.

Sculptor Martin Jennings will unveil the statue of Dickens reading in a chair on June 9th, the 133rd anniversary of the author's death, the Telegraph reported.

The sculpture was initially put on hold due to insufficient funds raised.

The Dickens Fellowship, which is backed by members of the writer's family, said the statue would celebrate his ferociously creative, colourful and monumental life. (ANI)
