Check Out 2013's 'Interior of the Year,' a Tiled Pad in Spain

This year's residential World Interior of the Year Award—accolades doled out at the annual Inside Festival in Singapore—goes to the Carrer Avinyó apartment on in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, a gorgeous holiday home that London firm David Kohn Architects designed for a pair of Barcelona-born, abroad-based brothers. The space's unambiguous headliner is the floor, a series of Sierpinksi-ish triangles with a super subtle gradient from red to green, though the place also boasts some suh-weet custom fixtures, like a loft library, cobalt kitchen, and movable stairs.

The decorating team began by gutting the space, which was previously cut up into rooms—a particularly awkward arrangement given the apartment's arrowhead shape. By jettisoning the internal partitions, David Kohn Architects wanted "to reveal the junction and so reconnect living in the apartment to the streets beyond." Indeed the architects write that the main space (the "glazed lobby," if you will) acts as "a threshold between the apartment and the city," with the bedrooms apportioned inside custom furniture, creating "the appearance of small buildings—the city beyond the apartment walls is mirrored by a diminutive city within."

As for the floors, the designers were inspired by the three-sided shape of the floorplan, and the graded coloring of the tiles—which, by the way, are by Mosaics Martí—is meant to subtly divide the brothers' living spaces. The custom dining table stands where the red and green are most mixed, outlining in a nuanced, design-y way the shared meeting space. More photos, above.
