With Saif-Kareena’s 'Agent Vinod' coming up, we check how many off-screen couples have managed to translate their chemistry on celluloid

There are many theories about why off-screen couples fail to translate their magical chemistry on the screen. Most agree that real life couples come with so much emotional baggage that their acting skills fail to cover-up their bedroom conflicts. And even if they do, a certain amount of wordless coldness fails to escape the camera. Here are the top 10 jodis that have featured together on the big screen:

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor

‘Saifeena’, as they are often referred to, have acted in many films together. While their odd edgy comic-thriller ‘Tashan’ failed to impress, their action-thriller ‘Kurbaan’ was critically acclaimed despite being a box office turkey. Going by their success rate in working together, ‘Agent Vinod’ might be a ‘Saif’ bet to go with. But with the unceremonious response that the promos have garnered, only time will tell as to how it fares at the box office.

Dilip Kumar and Saira Bano

By the above picture of these Bollywood veterans displaying their affection for each other, one would assume they would make for an award-winning partnership when paired together. Contrary to this, Saira Bano and Dilip Kumar have failed miserably when paired 'opposite each other': the box office results of ‘Gopi’, ‘Sagina’ and ‘Bairaag’ will completely convince you that off-screen love can only spell on-screen disaster.

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh

Now, here’s a couple that knows just how to disconnect from their domestic differences when working opposite each other to deliver blockbusters. They have worked in 11 films together, with their last one being ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ for which Neetu Singh was nominated in the ‘Best Actress’ category at the Star Screen Awards. But apart from the many nominations and awards, this duo will be best remembered for their timeless romantic comedies like ‘Khel Khel Mein’ and ‘Rafoo Chakkar’.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini

This couple may have drifted away from time to time in their relationship but that didn’t stop them from acting in 45 films together. After breaking records in the 70s with Hindi cinema’s most memorable classic ‘Sholay’, this couple fell from grace in the 80s with inglorious box office bummers like ‘Aag Hi Aag’ and ‘Elan-E-Jung’. Today, as both have resigned to grooming their separate sets of kids into building a career in films, this couple can’t be used to prove that offline love has the same zing on the big screen.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan
In most ways, this couple is regarded as the first couple of Bollywood. The two first worked together when he made a guest appearance in ‘Guddi’. But they’ve made audiences experience a spectrum of emotions in classics like ‘Zanzeer’, ‘Abhimaan’, ‘Chupke Chupke’ and a dozen more. While their onscreen chemistry was always regarded as electric, it wasn’t often cited as the reason for the film’s success. Today regarded as the film industry’s legendary couple, this ‘jodi’ has definitely managed to express its real love on the reel seamlessly and effectively.

Ajay Devgn and Kajol

Both masters of their art, this dusky duo has unfortunately never managed to portray their personal rapport on the big screen. While ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’ found little success and a lot of criticism for being too ‘inspired’, ‘Hulchul’, ‘Raju Chacha’ and ‘U, Me Aur Hum’ prevented this duo from being cast by any producer who is possessive about his money.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna

When you’ve worked together in films like ‘International Khiladi’ and ‘Zulmi’, it’s a major surprise that you would end up being hitched. Unless sorrow makes the heart grow fonder and Akshay and Twinkle bonded over their mutual losses by acting in their worst films ever. Definitely a couple you would like to see off-screen only.

Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan

When Big B’s son and the eternal beauty queen hooked up in films like ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke’, ‘Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Kuch Na Kaho’, it was the ultimate recipe for disaster. While ‘Guru’ was probably the couple’s only hit at the box office, the couple made the mistake of being cast again in ‘Raavan’ only to receive hellish reviews.

John Abraham and Bipasha Basu

They might have split up now but when they set the screen on fire in the much-controversial film ‘Jism’, they were touted as the hottest couple in B-town. But following this, none of their onscreen partnerships paid off and ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’ didn’t score on the field or off it. And now that the relationship has ended, it’s safe to say that we may not have to suffer their celluloid romance anymore.

Ritiesh Deshmukh and Genelia D’souza

It was difficult to tell whether this couple was trying to promote their latest ‘Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya’ by posing as a newlywed couple or promote their marriage by starring in a film together. While ‘Tujhe Mere Kasam’ was a box office promise broken, ‘Masti’ was a surprise hit only for its multi-starrer cast. Yet, cumulatively we can say that this couple is as striking onscreen as it is off-screen.
