Jay Kannaiyan and sanDRina - Jammin thru India

Day 23 - From hot Agra to cool Nainital

Leaving the hot plains of Uttar Pradesh behind, Jay rides up to Nainital, enjoying the cool Himalayan air

Dried cow dung storage for fuel in rural Uttar Pradesh.

I rode out of Agra with a big smile on my face as this was the day that I would finally leave the hot plains and its heat wave and climb into the foothills of the Himalayas. I took state highways northeast from Agra and passed through Bareilly and saw fertile lands getting ready for the coming rains. Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state of India with a population of over 200 million people and all its little towns were packed full of crazy driving, cows and buffaloes and trucks hauling goods here and there. From this density, I knew tranquillity lay ahead.

From Haldwani, the road started twisting and climbing up to Nainital. I rose from 200 meters of elevation to 2,000 meters! Wah, so refreshing to feel cool once again after frying for days riding through the plains. sanDRina was happy too to be leaning in and out of the well-designed turns. The mountains were quite dramatic as I got near Nainital and then I was greeted by the gorgeous sight of Naini Lake set amidst steep mountains with the sun slowly setting.

I was thrilled to finally be starting the Himalaya leg of my journey. From here on, it's small roads through the mountains until I descend from Kashmir.

The Man. The Machine. The Story

There are love stories and love stories, but none tugs more at the heart than a tale of infinite departure. In March 2010, Jay Kannaiyan and sanDRina, his beloved Suzuki DR650, left on a great journey back home to India. Jay quit his secure corporate job, sold his Chicago townhouse and every household possession, and left with sanDRina on a journey that saw them through 94,933 km, 32 countries, and 1,150 days on the road through the Global South -- from the USA through Latin America and Africa, heading towards India. At the core of this seemingly mindless pursuit was Jay’s desire to raise awareness about sustainability and a unique sentiment best described by an archaic Greek term, eudaimonia – the search for things that are true, good and beautiful.

Homecoming isn’t complete unless you experience the country you call home in all her varied terrain and temperaments. And so Jay and sanDRina will embark on a journey of discovery through India.

Yahoo India Travel follows Jay and sanDRina on their exhilarating discovery of India with daily updates from the road in words, pictures and video.
