Much before the Rajesh Khanna wave and the magnetic pull of Amitabh Bachchan, the artist who drew hysterical crowd was Suraiya, the number one actress cum the sensational singer of the 40s-50s. Glamsham.Com pays her homage on death anniversary and reveals how during her hey days she created ruckus among her fans and how she was escorted with premium security to defy her fans.

The younger generation may know Suraiya with connections to her love affair with evergreen actor Dev Anand. Besides her love affair she was the most saleable actress and commanded remuneration twice her contemporary actresses like Kamini Kaushal and Noorjahan.

Her popularity reached a pinnacle after she gave hits in row like ANMOL GHADI, DARD, BADI BEHEN, DILLAGI, MIRZA GHALIB etc. Soon she became the 'highest' paid actress of the 50s.

It's reported, that her popularity reached to such a zenith that during the premier of the movie BADI BEHEN her fans went berserk creating turmoil resulting in police resorting to lathi charge, a rare incident witnessed ever in the history of Hindi cinema!

After this incident Suraiya never attended any of her premieres fearing her fanatic fans. It may be hard to believe but it's true that outside her house, Krishna Mahal at Marine drive in Mumbai, from dawn to dusk her crazy fans used to hang around to have just a dekho of their beloved star. In fact, moving around for Suraiya had become so problematic that Suraiya had to take police protection round the clock both at her residence as well as while leaving out-of-doors!

Further, lore has it that actor Dharmendra in his juvenile days was so passionate about Suraiya that he saw her film DILLAGI forty times, each time walking on foot, miles to reach the cinema hall!
