EK THI DAAYAN was never pitched as a horror film, says Kannan Iyer

EK THI DAAYAN has released and as a supernatural affair, it has managed to find niche audience for itself. While some expected it to fare on the same lines as some of the other quintessential horror flicks (a few have even starred Emraan Hashmi), director Kannan Iyer states that his communication to the audience has always been clear from the very onset.

"For starters, we never pitched this as a horror film. Reason being that EK THI DAAYAN doesn't belong to that genre. Instead it is a supernatural mystery cum thriller and that's the way one should look at it. I know where you are coming from when you think of it as a horror film. A typical horror film buff would start expecting that there would be a 'jump on your seat' moment time and again. Well, EK THI DAAYAN isn't meant to be that experience," says the soft spoken director in as calm and composed tone as ever.

He does believe that at last the cliches of haunted bungalows, spirit hanging from a tree and crackling doors and windows have been done with his debut affair.

"Time and again you see a village legend when it comes to a 'daayan'. We managed to contemporaries it with our film. It was some task to bring on a subject like this and present it as an inherent Indian legend. The endeavour was to bring our characters in a modern Indian setting with no 'puraana bangla' and a 'peepal ka pedh'. That's a small win in itself," quips Kannan before signing off.
