Known for his imposing personality and deep baritone voice, Amrish Puri is primarily remembered for essaying negative roles in Hindi as well as English films. After failing his first screen test in the film industry, Puri turned his attention to theatre and eventually became well known as stage actor, even bagging the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1979.
Puri's success in theatre led him to television serials and eventually to films at the age of 40. Though he worked in many regional films, he is best known for his roles in Bollywood. Puri's most memorable character is that of megalomaniac terrorist leader Mogambo in Shekhar Kapur's science fiction film Mr. India.
Amrish Puri also played the role of antagonist Mola Ram in Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and the director was reportedly so impressed with Puri that he was said to have exclaimed that 'Amrish is my favorite villain- The best the world has ever produced and ever will!'
In his later years, Puri started appearing in character roles and also made a name for himself as a positive character in films like Gardish, Ghatak and a few other films. The legendary on screen villain passed away on 12 January 2005, due to a cerebral haemorrhage at the age of 72.
