Must-Try: DIY Manicure and Pedicure

Beautiful and well-kept hands and feet can be oh-so-charming. They also reflect a person’s lifestyle and hygiene at first glance. No doubt professional manicures and pedicures are relaxing. Just having your hands and feet cared for by another person is powerfully therapeutic. But if you're not in the mood to splurge, you can do your own mani-pedi at home.

Before you begin with your home manicure and pedicure procedure, here’s a look at all the manicure and pedicure equipment that you might need. This does not mean salon like hi-tech manicure and pedicure thingamajig, but simple things for hand and foot care at home.  All you need is:

  • A pack of cotton balls
  • A bottle of nail polish remover
  • An emery board or a pair of scissors
  • A nail trimmer
  • A cuticle remover
  • A bottle of your favourite nail colour
  • 2 toe separators
  • A pack of paper towels
  • A moisturiser

Removing nail colour: Take a cotton ball and dip it in nail polish remover. Now rub the cotton ball on your fingernails till the nail colour is completely removed revealing your true nail colour. Remember, use the nail polish remover sparingly as it is extremely drying and can damage the nail and cuticle.

Removing cuticle: Before beginning to remove cuticles, always dip your fingertips in warm plain water for three to four minutes. Cuticles are the soft skin at the bottom of your nail where the fingernail cartilage and skin meet. You can use a cuticle remover cream to remove the cuticles and gently push back the cuticles using a cotton bud. Never cut your cuticles. This removal of the cuticle helps your nail grow and promotes healthy nails. Massage away dead skin using circular movements.

For a pedicure, you need to soak your feet in warm water for a little while. Add in a little soap to the water or shampoo. You can add essence oils or salt to the hot water as well.

Trimming fingernails: Now that your nails have been soaked in water, they are soft and tender and can easily be cut and shaped as per your desired choice. You should use scissors for reshaping or shortening your nail to give them a better shape. Use nail clippers to trim your toenails. File the rough edges of your nail surface using a filer to smooth the nails and give them a proper shape

Exfoliation and moisturising: You need to massage your hands, arms, legs and feet when you sit down for a manicure and pedicure. Rinse your hands and use a pumice stone to remove the dead skin, rough areas and calluses under the feet. Once clear of the dead skin, use a thick moisturising cream on your hands and a foot cream on your feet to smooth rough dry skin

Applying nail colour: Once you are done with all the above steps, you can polish your nails with a nail colour of your choice. You need to polish the nails in layers and allow time for each coat to dry. First apply one coat of base, then two coats of colour and lastly a top coat. In case you have brittle nails, you can apply one or two coats of ridge filling nail polish on the nail instead of the base coat. Follow this with two coats of nail colour and then a top coat for shiny and lustrous nails.

What to avoid:

  • Avoid very hot water while soaking your hands, as this can dry out the skin and nails.
  • Avoid hard nail brushes.

After manicuring, use this homemade hand lotion: Take ½ cup rose water, ¼ cup after shave, ¼ cup glycerin, ¼ tbsp white vinegar. Mix all together and store it in a bottle for use.
