Will NAUTANKI SAALA! break Ayushmann's VICKY DONOR image?

By Joginder Tuteja, Glamsham Editorial

Exactly a year after VICKY DONOR, Ayushmann Khurrana would be seen as a central protagonist in NAUTANKI SAALA! With two films being as different from each other as cheese and chalk, right from stage (pun intended) to setting, for Ayushmann it would also be a film that would help him come out of the strong image of a carefree Punjabi youngster created in VICKY DONOR.

"For starters, I am playing a theatre guy here so I am not unemployed," smiles Ayushmann, "Moreover, even as a character, Ram Parmar is not as raw as Vicky; he is completely different. Also, this time around he is a Bombay, and not a Delhi guy. The journey from Lajpat Nagar to Bombay should be good enough for image difference to set in."

While one waits to see how exactly does Ayushmann deliver in this 'smile through' film by Rohan Sippy, one can pretty much see that Ayushmann is delivering majority of funny dialogues with a straight face. One can well presume that it must have been a tough task for him, considering the fact that his job is to make people smile in the film.

He reasons, "The situations are so unimaginable that you can't be laughing and smiling along even though humour is being generated for the audience. The fact is that I had to be real instead of 'trying' to be all funny. Though I am a big fan of conventional comedy, if you are making something as quirky and different as NAUTANKI SAALA! then you have to maintain subtlety in the character as well. You can't be loud in a traditional manner and this is what I have done in the film."

Guess that should make this 'nautanki' worth giving a dekko.
