Neon Lips Will Trend This Summer

The bare-face-bold-lip has been an unfailing make-up combination on runways for the last couple of years, more so because it translates so easily off the catwalk.

We had the year of the vintage red lip, then the season of the berry bitten pout, but this time around the colours are more saturated, the intensity is way higher. Introducing...the neon lip. Here's how to figure out which colour will suit your style.

Red: Not the classic crimson shade but veers more towards orange and is almost harshly matte. Prada had an interesting blink-and-you-miss-it effect -- a touch of white to highlight the cupid’s bow on the lip. Wear the shade completely matte like the models at Missoni or with a slicked-back hairstyle and graphic winged liner at Malini Ramani.

Coral: Hints of peach and pink soften this hue of red, making it much easier to wear. But when you build up the colour and saturate, it can make a statement too. Check out the coral lips (paired with bikinis and sunglasses at Shivan and Narresh) and you’ll see how perfect this shade is for summer 2013.

That’s not to say it can’t be rock n roll too.

"The first idea Dries [Van Noten] showed me was a Kurt Cobain/Courtney Love image, so I thought about a lip," Peter Philips said backstage at the designer's Spring show. "It's a bit more street," is how he described the colour.

Orange: In the tube, it looks like it would require some serious confidence to pull off, but this shade looks quite at home with the warm undertones in Indian skin. Minimalism for the rest of your look is a must to wear this shade right; just a set of thick lashes seen backstage at Rahul Singh is enough. If it’s too strong, pare down the glossy lip with a matte nude lipstick underneath.

Pink/Fuchsia: Hot, fluorescent, neon, fuchsia pinks -- you might balk at the intensity of these shades but try them before you trash them. Seeing them brighten up your face might make you a believer. Study how the models at Giles, Surily Goel and James Ferreira work these tricky shades.
