ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI AGAIN: Would Akshay Kumar be able to outshine Ajay Devgn's performance?

By Enkayaar, Glamsham Editorial

The trailers of ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI AGAIN is out and with the release of the trailer, comparisons have started being made between the lead players of both the films. Obviously, the comparison is owing to the fact that in the original i.e. OUATIM it was Ajay Devgn, who ruled the roost and gave one of his most convincing performances as a negative character. It was owing to his restrained performance that OUATIM emerged as one of the most successful gangster films made by Hindi film industry.

In OUATIMA, it is Akshay Kumar, who is now playing the role of a gangster and it is only for the second time in his acting career that Akshay is playing a negative character. Earlier Akshay Kumar had played a negative character in AJNABEE but it was in a different context. AJNABEE was a film that dealt with contemporary subject, while OUATIMA is a period film that tries to trace the history of Mumbai through the eyes of a hamster. Obviously the manner in which Mumbai has evolved over a period of time, the gangsters and warlords have played an important role and it provides ample scope for the screen writers to come up with content that provides actors to use histrionics to stamp their mark as actors of eminence. Now it is the time of Akshay Kumar to test waters and it would be interesting to watch whether Akshay Kumar would be able to give a towering performance as his seniors and colleagues from the past have given in such flicks like Big B in DEEWAR, AGNEEPATH, Ajay Devgn in OUATIM etc.

Akshay Kumar seems to have copied the mannerism that Danny had used in ANDHA KANOON of immersing the cigar in whiskey and drinking it, the difference being that Akshay does it with cigarette. For Akshay it would be a tough act to enact as it requires intense performance and Akshay in the recent times has been associated with performances that are frothy. For Akshay it would indeed be Manna from heaven if OUATIMA becomes a hit as it would help him upgrade himself to the category of serious performers. July is not far behind to judge it whether Akshay Kumar has passed the test or not?
