Pandit Ravi Shankar No More!

Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, who had been admitted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, United States last Thursday after he complained of breathlessness, passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 92.

Ravi Shankar, who trained under Baba Allauddin Khan of the Senia Maihar gharana, enjoyed worldwide popularity and was known for his in-depth understanding of various styles and schools of music. Ravi Shankar also scored music for Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali and other Bengali and Hindi movies. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999, and received three Grammy Awards. He continued to perform in the 2000s, sometimes with his daughter Anoushka Shankar. In 1966, George Harrison, the lead guitarist of The Beatles came to India to learn to play the guitar from Ravi Shankar.
 
The maestro's demise is being mourned by many celebrities like A.R Rahman, Kailash Kher and Vishal Dadlani as well as eminent politicians from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
