Redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis to Offer Google Glass Integration Technology

Hyundai has announced that it will offer a Google Glass integration application with the redesigned 2015 Genesis Sedan, which debuts next week at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. According to the automaker, its cloud-based Blue Link telematics platform will provide the capability through a new Glassware application that gives the owner the ability to remotely access service information and remotely activate vehicle functions simply by using a wearable device such as Google Glass.

"We see wearables as a technology trend, expanding from fitness and health monitoring to broader applications," said Barry Ratzlaff, executive director, Customer Connect and Service Development, Hyundai Motor America. "We're always exploring new ways to use technology to enhance the ownership experience for our customers."

Google Glass is a pair of glasses that works like a computer, showing the person wearing them information on a portion of the inside of the lenses similar to how modern televisions provide the ability to view two different programs simultaneously. The person wearing them can issue voice commands to execute tasks, obtain information, take photos or video, get directions, send text messages, and more.

Hyundai plans to offer Google Glass access to Blue Link features and Car Care services, with information presented as "cards" that notify the 2015 Genesis Sedan's owner when maintenance is due, allow the owner to schedule maintenance, and provide the ability to execute Blue Link functions such as remote engine starting, remote door locking and unlocking, vehicle finding in a crowded parking lot, and more. Hyundai intends to make its Glassware application compatible with similar wearable technologies as they become available from other companies.

As Hyundai prepares to debut the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan, a San Diego driver is fighting a ticket she received for wearing a Google Glass device while driving. The officer pulled the driver over for speeding and added the extra citation in accordance with California laws governing the use of a video screen in the front seat of a vehicle while the vehicle is underway. Separately, three states are considering bills that would ban driving while wearing Google Glass or similar technologies.
