Your Ride: 1970 AMC Rebel Machine

In 1970, following the success of the ’69 SC/Rambler, AMC introduced “The Machine” onto the Rebel platform. The specialty model soon became the most recognizable version of the car the company had ever produced. Complete with a signature red, white and blue cladding, and AMC‘s highest output engine at the time, it was a standout in the muscle car era.

One of our readers Dave sent us his rare 1970 Machine, but what makes his Machine so special is the mean green look, differentiating it from the signature all-American getup. Here’s his story:

Rebel 6

How did you acquire your ride?

I saw the car when I was 16 years old. I would ride the bus to the skills center from school and I saw it sitting in someone’s backyard behind their house for months. I finally went to look at it and told my brother some idiot put a sticker that says “THE MACHINE” on a Dart. My brother corrected me right away and told me how rare it was. Eventually, my brother ended up buying the car for me.

I towed it to the skills center and got it running. I drove it for a few months and blew the engine racing a Porsche. We pulled the engine and started to rebuild it but had trouble finding the cam bearing. The car sat and sat at my brother’s house and we finally sold it.

I found the car about 20 years later and ended up buying it back. It was just the way I had left it 20 years earlier. It still had my pay stub from 1983 in the glove box even. I finally got it back together and have been driving it for the last six years.

It’s said they produced around 2,000 Machines, but no one really knows the exact number. The first 1,000 were made red, white and blue, and after than any color was available to order. The cars came with the highest horsepower engine AMC made. It was a special 390. 4-speed or automatic transmission were available and they also came with four piston disc brakes and special suspension. They had a functional ram air scoop with a tachometer built into it. My car is the only documented one of this color. It’s called “Big Bad Green.”

Rebel 5

What drew you to it when you bought it?

Probably the color and the body style.

Does it have a name?

I usually refer to it as “My Machine.”

What do you feel like when you drive it?

It’s kind of freeing and brings back a lot of memories from high school.

Rebel 4

What you would change about your car, if anything?

I wouldn’t change anything about my car except maybe getting it fully restored one day.
