A Rumour-Laden September

Expect momentous stuff from Apple, Samsung and HTC for all gadget junkies this month.

Last week’s Samsung Galaxy Gear rumour has come to fruition, as an executive from the company has revealed that we will see this wearable tech at the Samsung event in September. While Lee Young-hee, Executive Vice President of Mobile, stated the device would not have a flexible display, he also indicated that it might not be a mass-market device, but one for testing the waters. He also confirmed that the Galaxy Note III will be announced on the same day.   As for the ‘iWatch’, rumours claim that Apple’s not yet ready to release its answer to Galaxy Gear. The likely date being thrown about pegs the release of the iWatch sometime in the second half of 2014.   For the present, however, September is poised to be a big month for Apple, if current rumours are to be believed. For one, a leaked email from a developer states 10 September as the release date for the upcoming update to Apple’s mobile OS. iOS7 was previewed at WWDC, and should be available for download sometime in September or October.   However, this specific date clashes with the date we’ve heard in separate rumours that claim there’s an Apple event scheduled to announce the new iPhone line-up. Assuming its authenticity, this is a big day for iPhone enthusiasts: not only will we see the iPhone 5S, but we will also be able to put all the 5C rumours to rest.   Speaking of which, the 5C and gold/champagne coloured 5S were both shown off in a new video from Apple’s supposedly perforated supply chain. The video shows off the bodies of all three rumoured 5S colour options – white, black and gold – as well as a blue 5C, which matches the 5S in size. But apart from the photos, we have no proof of the rumoured grey colour.   The iPhone 5S will compete with two major Android devices: the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. But while the S4 is barely a few months old, rumours have already begun to leak about its successor, slated for a Q2 2014 release. The Galaxy S5 is rumoured to receive one of the technologies originally slated for the Note III: optical image stabilisation. While the S4 has a pretty solid camera, OIS is expected to be the next big thing – and apparently that’s what Samsung’s all about right?   Meanwhile, HTC – Samsung’s trusty Taiwanese rival in the Android market – has long been rumoured to be planning a phablet of their own, to take on the upcoming Note III. With a design based on the critically lauded HTC One, the One Max is expected to boast a 5.9-inch 1080p display, a quad-core 2.3 GHz processor and 2 GB RAM, a 4-megapixel camera (based on their ‘UltraPixel’ tech), and a 2.1-megapixel camera up front. Also rumoured is a fingerprint scanner, which leaked images place on the back of the device, just beneath the camera. Expect to hear about it, officially, in September, somewhere around the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Note III.
