Saif's 19-year long career has swung wildly. Will 'Cocktail' finally work for him when Agent Vinod didn't?

When he made his debut in 1993, Saif Ali Khan was a lanky 23-year-old with long hair, strong accent and no great acting skills. Today, he is still strongly accented with a six-pack body and a body of work worth writing about. But his 19-year long career has swung wildly giddy highs and abysmal lows.Just when the media wrote him off after a spate of average films like 'Aarzoo' and 'Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega', Saif swung back as a strong supporting actor in 'Dil Chahta Hai'.Though his magnum opus 'Agent Vinod' with lady love Kareena Kapoor failed to impress the audience or the critics, Saif is unfazed. This time he is back in 'Cocktail ' as what he is best at: A romantic hero.  Here, a look at the films which worked for him.

Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Na Ho: This film was the turning point for Saif’s and breathed life to his dwindling career. Saif’s Sameer was much appreciated by the audience and made him a reliable supporting actor. In 'Kal Ho Na Ho', despite being pitted against the Badshaah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan, Saif’s boy-next-door act as Preity Zinta’s puppy best friend cum boyfriend got him the best supporting actor awards for that year.

Ek Hasina Thi: From suave to scheming, Saif handles both the aspects very well in this dark thriller which is loosely based on the Hollywood film ‘Double Jeopardy’. From cute lover boy to conniving man, Saif proved that apart from comedy, he can also play serious roles.

Omkara: Saif played the shrewd, conniving and repulsive character of Langda Tyagi and proved that despite being in a multi-starrer, he can well carve out a place for himself even in the crowd. His devious look, limping gait and the rustic lingo was completely different from any other role he ever played. The verdict:  Saif’s portrayal of the scheming Langda Tyagi brought Shakespeare’s Iago to life.

Parineeta: Saif as Shekhar was not the original choice for the film, infact he was approached by Viddhu Vinod Chopra for Girish’s role (which was eventually played by Sanjay Dutt). But Saif managed to convince the makers that he was perfect for the role. And he wasn’t wrong. His portrayal as brooding Shekhar who is sandwiched between his love for Vidya and his duty towards his father was critically acclaimed.

Being Cyrus:  This grim psychological tale of a dysfunctional Parsi family is perhaps one of Saif’s best performances till date. Apart from the brilliant supporting cast, his crisp lines and facial expressions were enough to carry the film forward. Despite lacking in item numbers or fight-sequences, Saif stands out for his performance.

Love Aajkal: His ladylove also gave him a thumbs-up after watching his twin performance in Imtiaz Ali's film. The actor turned producer for this film and played a double role as the film goes back and forth. The film was a box-office success and cemented his position as one of the top actors in Bollywood.

Hum Tum: With Hum Tum, Saif Ali Khan has arrived as a solo hero. Playing a cartoonist with flair, Saif’s performance was appreciated by audience and critics alike and got him a National Award. His director in his debut film Aashiq Aawara Umesh Mehra applauded his performance in Hum Tum and had quoted that the actor in him had evolved to a great extent.
