Sonal Deshpande: SONA SPA is a futuristic film

By Rachana Sheth, Glamsham Editorial

After films like QUEENS! DESTINY OF DANCE and TELL ME O KHUDA, Miraj Entertainment gears up for their third film SONA SPA, starring Naseeruddin Shah, directed by Makarand Deshpande. Where trend of doing realistic films is on, Miraj was keen on doing something unusual and original and therefore SONA SPA happened.

"We always wanted to do something unusual and which has originality. We did not want to touch cult films or do remakes, which is a fad these days. And I think people should not even attempt doing it. As nobody can recreate the same magic. They are outstanding in their own space. We are proud we did something original and in future also we will follow this mantra. Moreover, if we see Hollywood film like AVATAR, it was a complete fantasy film. It was not realistic and yet people accepted and loved it. One has to believe in his product. SONA SPA is a futuristic film," says Sonal Deshpande, co-producer

SONA SPA deals with the concept of lack of sleep. When we probed about making a film on sleep, Sonal said, "Why not a film on sleep? In today's era people suffer from insomnia. What we have shown is what can happen if we don't get proper sleep. If there is lack of sleep you suffer from so many disorders and ultimately it can lead to crime. It's not a small issue and in coming days this problem is set to become big." So ask if SONA SPA is a preachy film and she says, "It doesn't teach or preach anything."

Further she says, "SONA SPA has different emotions. It is a package of all the emotions and shades of life."

Sonal is pretty confident about SONA SPA. She says, "SONA SPA will be well-received by audience. People will stay inquisitive throughout the film as the subject of SONA SPA is absolutely fresh. And I bet with this film you will take something home. It will leave audience thinking. It's a paisa-vasool entertainer. "

However, ask her about commercial gains from an unusual film like SONA SPA and Sonal says, "Some films are commercial and some are not. We cannot really predict about a movie's fate. If films like KAI PO CHE!, KAHAANI, VICKY DONOR, PAAN SINGH TOMAR, etc can do such wonderful business despite being small films, why can't SONA SPA? Today people are accepting new concepts, new cast, new-age films. All they want is concept-oriented films. And SONA SPA is one such film. So I am quite hopeful about it."

There is a certain misconception doing the rounds about Naseeruddin Shah's character in the film. Clarifying about his role, Sonal says, "Naseer plays a simple Baba. There's no negative or positive shade attached to it."

Praising director Makarand Deshpande's skill, Sonal Deshpande says, "Makarand thinks beyond imagination. It's very difficult to find creativity and execution go hand in hand. But Makarand knows how to make that happen."

SONA SPA releases on 22nd March 2013.
