Jaisalmer, the desert city built by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, is on every tourist itinerary to Rajasthan. Besides the Golden Fort, which is central to the city and the cynosure of tourists, the city also boasts beautiful Jain temples in yellow sandstone. The intricate carvings on these temples challenge the more popular marble temples of Mount Abu in their beauty and finesse. Chandraprabhu, Rikhabdev, Parasnath, Shitalnath, Shantinath and Kunthunath are the major temples here, each devoted to a Tirthankara of the Jain tradition. The sculptures are elaborately carved and the female figures are voluptuous and bedecked with ornaments.
