Jaisalmer - jewel of the Thar desert

8 November 2013

Founded in the 12th century by Maharawal Jaisal of the Bhatti Rajput clan, Jaisalmer is a remote outpost in the Thar desert in Rajasthan. Its strategic location on the busy caravan trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia made it a flourishing trade centre. The city is famous for its fort, known as the Golden Fortress, and other splendid buildings made of local yellow limestone. The fort is today a threatened structure, mainly due to seepage of water from the pipes used by numerous hotels and modern houses inside it.
