White winter at Mt Zao, Japan
Mt Zao is one the most picturesque mountain valleys in the Tohoku region of Japan, a skiing resort that opens during winter and a major tourist attraction. Mt Zao is a complex volcano, the most active in northern Honshu. We arrived in the beautifully snow-laden mountains in midwinter. Obvious as may sound, we were greeted by furious freezing winds. After skiing, I concentrated on taking photographs of the mountains. We travelled 1600 m higher by cable car to a temperature of -20 degree Celsius. They were standing, the snow-covered snow monsters – frost-covered trees on the slopes. Taking a photograph at this point was nearly impossible but I couldn't just resist, says KESAVAN RAVI.
