"This is a very alarming landmark figure. The UN said in December that it thought there would be 1 million refugees in neighbouring countries by June. We're now in March so the figure has been reached three months before it was expected. It just indicates how bad the situation in Syria is. There are 7,000 people leaving Syria and going into neighbouring countries each day."

"We have got more refugees than we thought we would have, with less funds, so that is really really problematic. We would urge donors to wake up and turn those promises into real aid that actually will make the lives of people who've had to leave Syria, much, much better."

Number of Syrian refugees reaches million mark: UN

GENEVA, March 6, 2013 (AFP) - The number of Syrians who have fled their conflict-riven homeland has hit one million since fighting broke out three years ago, the UN's refugee agency said Wednesday.

"With a million people in flight, millions more displaced internally, and thousands of people continuing to cross the border every day, Syria is spiralling towards full-scale disaster," UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

"We are doing everything we can to help, but the international humanitarian response capacity is dangerously stretched. This tragedy has to be stopped."

The UNHCR said the level of one million comprised both registered refugees and those awaiting registration, and that the count was based on fresh data received from its offices in the Middle East.

The agency previously had estimated that numbers would reach 1.1 million by June but said Wednesday that it would adjust that figure.
